MOSES - PATRIARCH AND LAW GIVER
Exodus
I. Background
A. A new Pharaoh came to power that did not remember Joseph and persecuted the Israelites
B. He ordered all boy babies to be thrown into the Nile ; Moses Mother put him in a basket 2:1-4
C. Pharaoh's daughter found the baby and adopted him ; Moses Mother became his nurse 2:5-10
D. He was raised as an Egyptian and an Israelite
E. One day he killed an Egyptian that was beating an Israelite - he had made his choice 2:11-15
II. Moses The Israelite Deliverer
A. He flees to Midian and becomes a shepherd for forty years
B. One day God spoke to him in a burning bush and told him to return to Egypt and lead his people to Canaan 3:1-2
C. He goes to Pharaoh and demands that he let the people go in the name of the Lord 5:1-2
D. To convince Pharaoh God caused nine plagues to come on the land - still Pharaoh refused Ch 7-10
E. God said one more plague ( death of the first born ) and Pharaoh would let them go 11:1
F. The Israelites conducted the Passover to protect them from the death angel by putting blood on their door 12:1-6
G. That night the first born of the Egyptians and their animals died - even Pharaoh's son 14:5-9
H. When the Israelites leave Egypt they cross the Red Sea on dry land by God's miracle but the Egyptians die Ch 14
I. God feeds the people with mamma and quail ; God gives water from a rock Ch 16 & 17
III. The Mosaic Law
A. Moses went up Mount Sinai and God gives him the Ten Commandments Chapters 19 & 32
B. While Moses and Joshua were on the mountain Aaron lead the people in worshipping a golden calf 32: 1-14
C. When Moses saw their sin he broke the two tables of stone and forced the people to drink the melted calf 32:20
D. Moses received a second copy of the Ten Commandments and the Law was now given to the Children of Israel
IV. Take Homes
A. In the Patriarchal Period God told the Fathers what to do ; when they did it exactly as he said they were blessed
B. No two Fathers were told the same thing ; God's plan was for them - blessings were given to their Children
C. In all cases the Fathers had to make a clear choice - decide to stay where they were or do what God directed
D. Unless they did what God directed they were punished
